Fort Mill’s Grier McNeely goes for a kill during the Jackets match against Indian Land Tuesday evening.

The Fort Mill girls’ volleyball team won their home opener and improved to 4-1 on the season with a sweep of Indian Land Tuesday evening.

Fort Mill beat Indian Land 3-0 (25-18, 25-23, 25-9) to get the win. The Lady Jackets had a 10-day layoff from the start of the season at the North-South Volleyball Invitational in Rock Hill Aug. 18-19 until Tuesday.

Lady Jackets head coach Makala McCrorey said the season has been a good start so far and being in her second year, she feels like everybody on the team is on the same page.

“I feel like we are more centralized,” she said.

Fort Mill controlled the first and third sets, but struggle to hang on in the second set.

“I don’t think we played our best,” McCrorey said. “Overall, we pulled through.”

In the opening set, Fort Mil jumped out to a 4-0 start before Indian Land scored. They were able to push that lead to 10-3 forcing the Warriors into a timeout. Out of the timeout, Fort Mill continued to pull away and grab a 20-10 lead.

Indian Land fought back and closed the gap to 23-18 forcing Fort Mill to hit pause with a timeout, but the Jackets came out of the time out to score the final two set points.

Fort Mill opened the second set scoring the first point, but had their hands full more with Indian Land than in the first set. The two teams split the first eight points at 4-4 as they traded points back and forth. Fort Mill went up 11-8, but Indian Land battled back to tie the set and then pulled away to take a 19-16 lead forcing the Jackets into a time out.

Fort Mill came out of the break with a renewed drive an tied the set at 20-20, before scoring five of the next eight points to grab the win.

Leading 2-0 in the match, Fort Mill jumped out to a big start against the Warriors in the third set and went up 10-2 when Indian Land decided it needed to hit pause with a time out. Things really didn’t get any better for the Warriors after the time out, as Fort Mill continued to pull away to win the set and sweep the match.

Fort Mill is next schedule to take on Dutch Fork at home Sept. 5.
