Catawba Ridge’s Callan Hiser goes to fire a shot during their game against Spartanburg Monday night.

The Catawba Ridge boys’ lacrosse team held off a strong Spartanburg Vikings team to get a 11-9 win Monday night.

Playing for the first time in two weeks, Catawba Ridge came out a little slow despite controlling the offense early.

“We were short on numbers tonight,” said Catawba Ridge head coach Mike Gambrill. “We are playing some young guys. We got real good play from Drew (Fikis).”

Fikis scored for the Copperheads just under eight minutes left in the first quarter. The Copperheads went up 2-0 less than a minute later as Caleb Williams found the net.

Spartanburg was able to have some success cutting the Catawba Ridge lead in half about midway through the first quarter. The Vikings would tie the match at two before a Callan Hiser would score at 2:26, followed by a goal from Boston Halpin less than 90 seconds later to make it 4-2 at the end of the first quarter.

Halpin opened the second quarter with a goal 47 seconds into play.

Spartanburg bounced back with four consecutive goals to go ahead 6-5 with 1:20 left in the second quarter. However, Fikis got his second goal of the half with 0.1 seconds left to tie the game heading into the half.

Hiser got Catawba Ridge off to a good start in the second half scoring a goal to give them the lead again 96 seconds into play.

Fikis collected a hat trick for himself with 6:44 left in the third quarter extending the Copperheads lead to 8-6.

With about four minutes left in the third, the Vikings would cut even further into the Copperheads lead and cut the lead to just one heading into the fourth quarter.

Williams got his second goal of the game 48 seconds into the fourth by staying on top of things and flicking a loose ball into the net with a little golf like shot.

The two teams traded goals after that with Fikis getting his fourth of the game.

Halpin added his third goal of the game with about 5:30 left to give Catawba Ridge some breathing room making it 11-8.

Spartanburg would add one more goal with 30 seconds left.

The win improved Catawba Ridge to 7-6 on the season. They are scheduled to finish the regular season hosting Eastside Thursday, April 11.
