The Fort Mill Yellow Jackets boys’ basketball team opened their season with a 75-53 win over York Prep in the Yellow Jackets Classic.
Despite the convincing win, Fort Mill head boys coach Myron Lowery wasn’t happy with his team’s performance.
“I don’t like how we handled situations,” Lowery said. “I don’t like how we reached to things beyond our control. We got to do a better job closing out shooters.”
Fort Mill struggled early in the game with turnovers, but York Prep struggled to convert off those turnovers.
Offense was slow for both teams in getting started. Fort Mill was more patient in their shot selection and was able to get to the basket. That patience led to a 12-0 run to end the first quarter with the Jackets jumping out to a 16-3 lead after the quarter.
Fort Mill’s Nas Berry opened the second quarter with a 3-pointer. The Jackets stayed hot in the second quarter with a second consecutive 3-pointer by Jermier Nelson.
The Jackets were just as strong on defense holding York Prep to just one-shot attempt per possession for the most part.
Fort Mill was able to get to the basket easily scoring in transition off defensive rebounds. Logan Parker caught fire for Fort Mill in the second quarter scoring seven of the 21 points for the Jackets. Fort Mill took a 37-15 lead into the half.
York Prep started playing better in the second half putting more defensive pressure on the Jackets. Berry got Fort Mill moving scoring four of their first six points, but the Jackets offense wasn’t as fluid as it had been in the first half.
York Prep was stronger behind the 3-point arc, but Fort Mill seemed to answer most of the time as Berry scored 10 points in the third quarter.
York Prep outscored Fort Mill 21-18 in the quarter, but the Jackets led 55-36 heading into the final quarter. Fort Mill kept their foot on the gas in the fourth quarter. Berry dropped in eight more of his team high 28 points. Parker added 16 points and Nelson chipped in 11 points.
Fort Mill takes on Charlotte Latin in the finals on Tuesday at 7:30 at Fort Mill High.
