Catawba Ridge’s Skyla Tuthill shoots a free throw in a game from earlier this year. Tuthill recently scored 40 points against Lancaster.

The Catawba Ridge Copperheads swept the Lancaster Bruins in their first meeting on the basketball court Wednesday night.

Catawba Ridge girls won in a 71-42 blowout over Lancaster as Skyla Tuthill dropped in 40 points in the win for the Copperheads, including hitting eight 3-pointers.  This pushes Catawba Ridge to 17-1 overall and 4-0 in Region 3-4A halfway through their region schedule.

The Copperheads’ boys team got a 45-43 win over the Bruins in a battle to two top 10 teams in 4A. Catawba Ridge was led by Grant Lovette with 15 points, as both Tyler France and Carter Hendrick each added seven points. The win improves Catawba Ridge to 18-3 overall and 3-1 in region play.

Both the girls and boys are back in action Friday at South Pointe in key region games. For the boy’s team, Catawba Ridge is trying to avenge their only loss in region play, while the girl’s team looks to stay undefeated in the region against their toughest competition to date in region play.

In other basketball related news, Nation Ford boys’ and girls’ teams fell on the road at Gaffney. The girls team fell 63-45 and dropped to 5-15 overall and 1-3 in Region 3-5A. Camille Kerridge led Nation Ford with 23 points in the loss.

The Nation Ford boys team fell 43-35 to Gaffney and are now 1-3 in region play and 6-13 overall on the season. Quadier Hand led the Falcons with 15 points in the loss.

Nation Ford is back in action with another road game Friday as they travel to Boiling Springs. This will start the second half of their region schedule, as the only region wins for both the boys’ and girls’ teams for the Falcons came against Boiling Springs.

Also on Wednesday, the Fort Mill girls finished up their non-region games in a make-up game from a postponement earlier in the season. Fort Mill fell to Spring Valley on the road 54-31 to fall to 7-14 overall. The Jackets are back in action returning to region play at home against Gaffney Monday, Jan. 31 to finish out the first half of their region schedule, where they are 1-2 in region play. The Fort Mill boys’ game will follow.

Wrestling

The Fort Mill wrestling program is scheduled to finish out their Region 3-5A schedule Friday night as they host a series of teams in a make-shift dual tournament.

Because of recent weather and COVID related issues, the region schedule has been in flux recently. The individual region tournament is scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 29 with four teams converging at Fort Mill High for the tournament.

However, since there are still a series of dual matches that have to take place, Fort Mill is hosting a dual type tournament Friday so teams can finish out their region schedule the night before the individual region tournament.

Fort Mill sits at 2-1 in the region and has one region dual left against Boiling Springs. Nation Ford still has two duals left against Gaffney and Boiling Springs also. Boiling Springs has yet to wrestle a region match so they will have four matches Friday night all at Fort Mill.

The first round of matches will feature Boiling Springs and Clover and Nation Ford and Gaffney competing against each other. Nation Ford will then wrestle Boiling Springs in round two and Fort Mill will wrestle Boiling Springs in round four. The fifth and final round will feature Gaffney against Boiling Springs.

Matches Friday are schedule to start at 5 p.m. The individual region tournament is scheduled to start Saturday morning. And weather has delayed another wrestling event, as the Region 3-4A individual tournament, scheduled for Saturday as well at York Comprehensive has now been pushed back to Tuesday, Feb. 1 at 5 p.m. because of the potential for snow.
