The Fort Mill girls’ lacrosse team is closing in on the Region 3-5A title after a convincing win over rivals Nation Ford Wednesday night.

The Jackets won handily 20-3 to improve to 6-0 in region play with two more match to play. Fort Mill is now 7-3 overall. They will close out their region schedule against Clover at home Monday, March 27. They play Spring Valley Thursday, March 23.

Fort Mill didn’t have much trouble after finding their rhythm in the first half. The Jackets went up 4-0 before Nation Ford scored. The Falcons scored back-to-back goals to make it 4-2, but was never able to pull any closer.

The first of four goals by Fort Mill were scored by Taylor Wilcox 26 seconds into the game. Wilcox would score four goals in the game and bookend things for Fort Mill. After her initial goal, Grace Sandler scored back-to-back goals as she would score seven in the game. Lydia Laney would then score the first of her five goals.

Nation Ford then got a goal from Georgia Sharpless and one from Reese Wiethoff to pull within two for the Falcons.

Fort Mill scored six consecutive goals with goals from Laney, Sandler, Wilcox and Molly Bennett. Reese Maidhof would score before the end of the first half for Nation Ford as Fort Mill led 10-3 at the half.

The second half was all Fort Mill as they scored 10 unanswered goals. Sandler, Laney, Wilcox and Bennett scored to move things along for the Jackets, as all of them would collect hat tricks or more for Fort Mill. Erin Hennessey added a goal as well for Fort Mill in the second half.

After region play for Fort Mill, they will face some strong competition in teams such as Charlotte Country Day, JL Mann, Chapin and Myers Park.

Fort Mill came into the game with Nation Ford coming off a 7-4 loss to Spartanburg, which head coach Kirsten Terry said the team was able to work things out against Nation Ford.

“We are heading in the right direction,” Terry said. “Last night (against Spartanburg) was a wakeup call.”

For Nation Ford, the Falcons fell to 5-6 overall and 3-4 in region play. They will travel to Spring Valley Monday, March 27 for their next game.

The Nation Ford baseball team lost game two of their series to Blythewood 13-3 to even the series at 1-1. The Falcons got four hits and fell to 3-2 in Region 3-5A play and 7-4 overall.
