Catawba Ridge’s Kyleen Bents (20) and Brooks Dority, right, close off an Indian Land player from getting to the ball during their match.

With the help of a strong first half, the Catawba Ridge Lady Copperheads soccer team grab a key Region 3-4A win over the Indian Land Warriors Tuesday night.

The match-up was the Copperheads toughest in their region schedule as Indian Land came in at 6-2, but Catawba Ridge came away with the 4-1 win. Seniors Sarah Sexton, Sadie Commerford and Kyleen Bents all came up big for Catawba Ridge scoring goals for the Copperheads.

“We played with a lot of emotion in the first half,” said Catawba Ridge head coach Joe Dority. “Seniors do what seniors do.”

The Copperheads didn’t waste any time attacking the goal getting a shot off 42 seconds into play.

Catawba Ridge controlled possession early in the match, but wasn’t able to get the open space they need for a clean shot after the initial strike.

As the match went on, the Copperheads got several corner kicks, but the Indian Land defense was on task to keep Catawba Ridge out of the net.

Indian Land was able to get past midfield and threaten to score with about 20 minutes remaining in the opening half. The Warriors peppered the goal with about 10 minutes left in the half, but the Copperheads back line was up for the task.

Catawba Ridge squeezed a shot by the Warriors’ keeper as Commerford put the Copperheads on the board in the 35th minute.

Less than 90 seconds later, Bents then caught the Indian Land keeper off guard to put the Copperheads up 2-0 going into the half.

Sexton took over in the second half for Catawba Ridge and scored four minutes into play and then again at the 49th minute mark to put the Copperheads up 4-0 at that point.

Indian Land finally got on the board in the 65th minute with a goal from Tucker Landry. After the goal, the Warriors were unable to close the gap anymore as Catawba Ridge would close out the remainer of the match without allowing another goal.

The win puts Catawba Ridge at 9-3 overall and 4-0 in region play. They host Northwestern Friday, March 22 for their next match.
