CHARLESTON – The Catawba Ridge Copperheads baseball team took three of four games at the Hanahan Invitational Tournament in the Charleston area this week.

With three wins, the Copperheads come out of the tournament with a 17-5 record on the year after having wrapped up their Region 3-4A title the week before entering the tournament.

Catawba Ridge beat West Ashley, Randleman and Nansemond River (Va.) in the tournament, and lost to Summerville.

The Copperheads opened the tournament Monday with a 7-4 win over West Ashley. Catawba Ridge rallied after being down early in the game for the win as Harrison Wilson, Jonathan Barschow, Tyler Levy, Lane Boutwell and Jackson Mullen all collected two hits each in the game and accounted for 10 of the 12 hits by the Copperheads. Jake McCoy got the win on the mound going six innings and striking out seven while walking two and allowing four runs on five hits.

On Tuesday, Catawba Ridge used a six run sixth inning to pull away from a Randleman, North Carolina team to get an 8-3 win. McCoy went 3-5 at the plate and Levy went 3-4 to get half of the 12 Copperheads’ hits. Wilson grabbed the win off the bump going four innings and allowing one run on five hits while striking out five and walking three.

After a five-game win streak, the Copperheads dropped a game to Summerville 9-2 in the semifinals Wednesday. The hot hitting Copperheads managed just four hits in the game and allowed eight of the nine runs from Summerville in the first inning.

In their final game of the tournament Thursday, Catawba Ridge won a 13-12 slugfest over Nansemond River, out of Suffolk, Va. McCoy, Wilson, Barschow and Mullen each had two hits in the game. Both Mullen and Owen Noonan drove in three runs and Trevor Testerman drove in two runs in the 11-hit win for the Copperheads. Catawba Ridge used a six run sixth inning to pull ahead of the Virginia school and held off a rally by them which saw them score seven runs in two innings.

Catawba Ridge returns home next week with two games against rivals Nation Ford with the first one schedule for Monday, April 18 at home and then at Nation Ford Friday, April 22.
