Catawba Ridge’s Sara Rocheleau slides into home plate at Nation Ford catcher Abigail Loser waits for a throw home.

For 11 days, the Catawba Ridge softball team had to live with their last game being a lost to Indian Land. They shook that off with a 23-7 rout of the Nation Ford Falcons to bounce back after spring break.

The Copperheads fell to Indian Land 6-5 to drop its first Region 3-4A game of the season the Friday before spring break. They then had to sit on that throughout the entire break.

Catawba Ridge head coach Michael Kidd was glad to see his team bounce back after that loss.

“They really hit the ball,” Kidd said. “I couldn’t have asked for more coming out of spring break. Coming off that loss and a break having a game like this was perfect.”

The Copperheads scattered 23 hits in the game to go with their 23 runs. Audrey Wilson and Mia Kovacs each went 5-5 and Sara Rocheleau went 4-4 in the game. Wilson drove in three runs and hit a solo home run. Kendra Murray went 1-3 with three RBI in the game as well. Rocheleau had two RBI also for Catawba Ridge. Janelle Ilacqua also had a solo home run in a 2-4 performance at the plate.

Catawba Ridge wasted no time getting on the board putting up five runs in the first inning. Nation Ford didn’t play bad early on and held their own in the early going against the Copperheads. The Falcons scored three in the bottom of the first four hits. Nation Ford was led by four players at the plate as Sydney Johnson, Olivia Southerly, Abigail Loser and Patience Wehrmeyer all had two hits in the game.

The Copperheads scored runs in every inning as they added two more runs in the second inning and five more in the third inning on four hits. Nation Ford rallied some with two runs in the third inning on four hits, but Catawba Ridge’s bats were too much for the Falcons as they scored five runs in the fourth inning on five hits and then six runs in the fifth inning on six hits to blow the game open.

The win puts Catawba Ridge at 17-2 overall on the season. For Nation Ford, they fall to 8-9 with the loss.

“We got the spring break blues,” said Nation Ford head coach Craig Brown. “They are a state championship team and we made them look like a state championship team. I wanted to show better than that against them.”

Nation Ford host York Wednesday for senior night and Catawba Ridge will next play at home Friday against South Pointe.
