Chloe Burger throws a pitch for the Copperheads during their playoff opening game Tuesday evening.

The Catawba Ridge Copperheads softball team crushed Wade Hampton to open the 4A playoffs.

Playing for the first time in two weeks, Catawba Ridge won 17-0 in three innings as Wade Hampton had only one base runner reach base and didn’t collect a hit in the three innings off Copperheads starter Chloe Burger.

Catawba Ridge had 12 hits in the game and consistently was able to steal on the Wade Hampton catcher. The Copperheads were led by Sarah Rocheleau at the plate as she went 3-3 with a double, home run and four RBIs.

Three other Catawba Ridge players had two hits each as Braylon Lawrence, Mia Kovacs and Kyrsten Reynolds each went 2-2 at the plate. Lawrence had three RBIs, including a two-run home run, and both Kovacs and Reynolds had two RBIs each as well.

Wade Hampton had the first base runner with the first batter of the game, but didn’t have any more as Burger struck out eight over three innings and didn’t walk another batter.

Catawba Ridge started modestly scoring three runs on one hit in the first inning as Rocheleau doubled in a run to get the Copperheads on the board.

However, when the second inning rolled around, the Copperheads scored 14 runs on 11 hits in the inning and batted around twice.

“We have been working on driving the ball,” said Catawba Ridge head coach Michael Kidd. “We have tried to put ourselves in game situations. Our subs even came in and hit the ball well. We have hit the ball well all year long.”

Catawba Ridge plays again at home in the second round of the District playoffs Thursday, May 4 against Midland Valley.
