ANDERSON – The Nation Ford boys’ golf team finished tied for third in the 5A Upper State qualifier at Cobb’s Glenn Country Club in Anderson.

Nation Ford shot a 294, one stroke off the school record of 293 which they set last week at the Region 3-5A tournament at Edgewater Golf Club. Nation Ford qualified for next week’s 5A state tournament at the Country Club of Lexington May 13-14 with their third-place finish.

The Falcons’ Carter Smith led Nation Ford and was medalist of the tournament with a four-under par 68. He was followed by Justin Wosje with a 74 and both Ben Wakefield and Harrison Lapointe each had rounds of 76.

Spartanburg won the event with a team score of 288, followed by TL Hanna with a 290 and Mauldin tying Nation Ford with a 294.

Fort Mill came in 11th place with a 318 and failed to qualify for the 5A state tournament. Cade Bettie shot a two-over par 74 to lead the Jackets. Baker Tolentino and Austin Anderson each shot an 80 and Mason Jaeckli and David Harrigan each shot an 84 for the Jackets.

In the 4A Upper State qualifier held at Edgewater Golf Club in Lancaster, Catawba Ridge finished 10th and failed to qualify for the 4A state tournament May 13-14 at Rose Hill Golf Club in Bluffton.

North Augusta won the tournament with a 291, as Catawba Ridge shot a 328 as a team.

The Copperheads were led by OT Mitchell, who shot a two-under par 70. He qualified for the 4A state tournament next week as an individual. Following his score was an 81 from Hunter Warren, an 86 from Drew White and a 91 from Niam Sethi.

Besides golf and Nation Ford softball, weather issues plagued the rest of the local teams in the playoffs.

The Nation Ford softball team was able to get its elimination game in with Boiling Springs winning 8-7, despite a lengthy delay between the fifth and sixth innings because of weather. Abigail Loser led the Lady Falcons at the plate going 4-4 with two RBIs. Tori Baldino and Paizlei Ross each had two hits in the win. Kailey Alston went six innings for the win allowing five runs on six hits, while walking three and striking out three. Nation Ford now must sweep a double header at TL Hanna Wednesday, May 8 to advance in the playoffs. The Lady Falcons are now 15-6 overall on the season.

Catawba Ridge softball pushed their game with Airport in the 4A playoffs to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 7.

Fort Mill boys’ soccer must go back to Greenville after their 5A Upper State championship match with JL Mann was canceled because of storms in Greenville County. They are scheduled to play at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 7.

The Fort Mill baseball team got to just the second batter of the game at Dutch Fork when their game was delayed. They will resume play at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 7 at Dutch Fork with a possible doubleheader if Fort Mill can win game one in the District II finals.
