Scoring surges in the second quarter and the second half set the Fort Mill boys’ lacrosse team apart from the Nation Ford Falcons.
Fort Mill beat their rival Falcons 13-4 getting some revenge from taking their lumps against them in recent years.
“It’s the changing of the guard,” said Fort Mill head boys’ lacrosse coach Alex Tindall. “The first couple of years through the program these guys got beat up by the Nafos and the Clovers, but they are finally putting their foot down. They are rewriting the script.”
Charlie McGuire scored first for Fort Mill about two minutes into the match. The Falcons struggled early to get possession, but once they did, they were able to make the most of it and score with about 8:30 left in the opening quarter. Dylan DeJute put Nation Ford on the board with their first goal of the match.
The tie did not last long as Maddox Baucom put the Jackets ahead less than a minute later. The 2-1 Fort Mill lead would be all the scoring in the first quarter as the Jackets took the small lead to the second quarter.
A little more than 90 seconds into the second quarter, the Falcons tied the match with a goal from Cam Larranga.
Fort Mill continued to answer the Falcons as McGuire got his second goal about a minute later to put the Jackets back on top. After a Jackets timeout, McGuire collected a hat trick with his third goal of the match to start a swing in Fort Mill’s direction.
In less than 80 seconds, the Jackets scored three more goals from Moses Bowser, Cam Wilcox and McGuire giving the Jackers a 7-2 lead.
Nation Ford had their chances, but struggled keeping possession and passing the ball. DeJute got his second goal of the game with about 75 seconds left in the first half.
The third quarter was a battle of attrition for both teams, despite Nation Ford controlling possession for much of the time. The Falcons’ struggled to score despite getting multiple shots off within the first five minutes. Larranga finally broke through with his second goal of the match for Nation Ford.
The Jackets would score the final six goals of the game. Fort Mill was more patient on offense when they did have the ball. The Jackets’ Oliver Kulchuck and Bowser had consecutive goals within 10 seconds of each other in the third quarter. The two goals opened another flurry for Fort Mill as they would go up 10-4 with less than four minutes to go on Kulchuck’s second goal.
In the fourth quarter, Fort Mill’s Carson Maloney kept the scoring going with his goal a little less than 8:30 left in the match. Baucom was next with his second for the Jackets as they continued to extend their lead with about seven minutes remaining. McGuire added his fifth goal of the match two minutes later
