
The Fort Mill boys’ volleyball team struggled to keep up with the Boiling Springs Bulldogs falling in three sets.
Fort Mill fell 25-20, 25-21, 25-19 to the Bulldogs and dropped to 3-7 on the season.
“We are going through an adjustment phase,” said Fort Mill head coach Tamisha Martin. “We had to make some adjustments with out setter being injured. I thought we have had it figured out. Our more experienced players need to step up.”
Boiling Springs started strong and stayed in control through the first set. The Bulldogs went up 5-3 to start and then pushed the lead to 10-3 before Fort Mill took a timeout.
The Jackets battled back to pull within one at 20-19, but couldn’t get over the hump. After a Boiling Springs timeout, Fort Mill was unable to get the lead as the Bulldogs scored three straight to go up 23-19 before closing out the first set.
Boiling Springs again started strong in the second set and went up 6-3. Fort Mill rallied to stay competitive, but again was unable to tie the set as the Bulldogs stayed one step ahead. The Jackets pulled within four a couple of occasions, but still wasn’t able to tie the match as Boiling Springs took the second set.
Fort Mill kept the third set close despite the Bulldogs going up 9-6. The Jackets came back to go up 14-13 before Boiling Springs took a timeout.
After the timeout, the two teams traded points, but the Bulldogs then surged ahead to grab a four-point lead at 20-16. Boiling Springs kept control and was able to get the win to sweep the Jackets in three sets.
Up next for Fort Mill is another home match on Tuesday, Sept. 16 against Blythewood.
Sept. 15 Roundup
The Fort Mill girls’ tennis team beat Northwestern 5-1. The win improved the Jackets to 5-0 on the season. Winning for Fort Mill was Kendall McCarty 6-3, 6-2; Molly Goodson 6-0, 6-0; Avalon Stevens 6-1, 6-1, Smriti Kirubakaran 6-0, 6-0 and in doubles, Sofia Burger and Ellie Corbet 6-1, 6-0.
The Catawba Ridge girls’ golf team beat Fort Mill 163-177 as they improved to 6-0. Brooke Mehlhouse led for the Copperheads with a one-under par 35 at Fort Mill Golf Club. She was followed with a 41 by Anjali Peddisetty and a 42 by EllaRose Hill. Jordan Lyons finished with a 45. For Fort Mill, Lauren Venino led with a 41. Both Claire Collins and Skylar Sartwell added rounds of 45 and Campbell Grant finished with a 46.
