Fort Mill was led by Joey Curtis Thursday night who scored five of their six goals against South Meck.

The South Meck Sabres pulled away in the second half to beat the Fort Mill boys’ lacrosse team 12-6 in their regular season finale.

Fort Mill isn’t a lock for the playoffs at 6-10 on the season, but head coach Alex Tindall compared the playoffs to March Madness saying if you are in, anything can happen. Playoffs for boys’ lacrosse start next week.

“I feel good if we get in,” he said. “We have a lot of guys healthy. We just have to find ways to quit shooting ourselves in the foot.”

South Meck took the advantage early scoring just over two minutes into the game. Fort Mill had early chances as well, but struggled to hold possession. They were finally able to break through with a goal from Joey Curtis just over two minutes left in the opening period.

Curtis came back less than 30 seconds later and gave the Jackets the lead with 1:42 left in the first quarter. That 2-1 advantage took Fort Mill into the second quarter.

Both teams traded possessions throughout most of the second quarter as rains became more consistent as the first half wore on. Curtis secured a hat trick scoring at 3:37 to extend the Fort Mill lead at 3-1.

That lead was short lived as South Meck came back and scored two goals to tie the game at three with 28 seconds left in the first half as that score sent them to the break.

South Meck opened the second half scoring 32 seconds into play for their third consecutive goal between the last two periods.

Fort Mill struggled to hold on to the ball in the third quarter. Those struggles led to more opportunities for the Sabres as they went up 5-3.

Curtis kept Fort Mill in the game coming back to score after the next face off for his fourth goal of the game.

South Meck stayed one step ahead scoring again with three minutes left and then 30 seconds later in the third quarter to get a 7-4 advantage.

Fort Mill kept fighting as Will Johnson scored for the Jackets with two minutes left in the third quarter. The Sabres added another goal heading into the fourth quarter leading 8-5.

South Meck added a ninth goal in the fourth quarter with about five minutes left.

Like he did most of the game, Curtis rallied Fort Mill to score his fifth goal and cut into the Sabres lead.

However, South Meck would score three more goals in the final 4:30 of the game to double up Fort Mill.
