Post 43’s Sam Czyz crosses home plate to score a run for Fort Mill during their game against Davidson County Sunday.

The Palmetto State won the American Legion North Carolina-South Carolina Challenge winning seven out of nine games to win the series for the first time since 2019.

Fort Mill put the stamp on the three-day event held at Fort Mill High School by beating Davidson County 7-5 on the back of 11 hits as Post 43 improved to 6-4 overall this season.

In Sunday’s triple header on Father’s Day, Rock Hill beat Queen City 9-5 and Davidson County 14-12 and Fort Mill then closed things out for the Palmetto State with the win over Davidson County as well.

Post 43 was led by Nico Bartolotti, Scott Young, Zach Jennings, and Sam Czyz each of which had two hits in the game. Jennings and Hunter Busque each drove in two runs for Fort Mill.

Post 43 scored a run in every inning except the fifth inning. Fort Mill scored their first run in the first inning on a wild pitch.

In the second inning, Jonathan Barschow doubled to score Czyz to put Fort Mill up 2-0. Davidson County then scored three runs in the top of the third to take the lead. Post 43 added a run in the third inning as Czyz doubled scoring Young to tie the game.

Post 43 would take the lead for the final time in the fourth inning as they would score three runs on four hits, all with two outs. Busque drove in Bartolotti on a single and Jennings drove in Young, who doubled earlier in the inning.

Davidson County picked up a run in the fifth to cut the lead to 6-5, but Fort Mill would get one more run in the bottom of the sixth to maintain their lead.

Jacob Iverson got the win for Post 43 going two and a third innings allowing two runs on three hits, while walking four and striking out four. Miles Corcoran got the start for Fort Mill going two and a third innings allowing three runs on three hits while striking out a couple. Blake Sanders also pitched two and a third innings allowing two hits to close out the game.

Post 43 returns to action and league play on the road Tuesday at Lancaster Post 31.
