Sophia Giarrizzi approaches a ball for Fort Mill during their match Friday against Spring Valley.

With their last tune-up before the playoffs, the Fort Mill girls’ soccer team finished off Region 3-5A play with an impressive win over the Spring Valley Vikings on senior night.

Fort Mill shutout the Vikings with a 7-0 win and finished the regular season 9-8-1 overall and 6-4 in region play. Fort Mill finished third in the region and will hit the road to Boiling Springs in the first round of the playoffs Tuesday, May 2.

Fort Mill head girls coach Joelle Brotemarkle said she feels good about where her team is now as the playoffs start.

“I feel like someone from our region can win it all,” she said. “I am proud of our seniors. We just have to take it one game at a time. We are capable of going all the way.”

Fort Mill controlled the second half and was able to consistently push their offense into scoring position.

Fort Mill played well in the first half and took a small but strong 2-0 lead by the half. In the second half, they really turned up the pressure on Spring Valley and scored five second half goals.

In the first half, Elliott Thieman scored both goals for Fort Mill with the first one coming in the 16th minute of play to put the Jackets on the board. About 13 minutes later, she scored again in the 29th minute of the first half.

Once the second half started, Fort Mill wasted no time as Mackenzie Grant scored just 43 seconds into play as the Jackets would have five different people score in the second half.

Kennedy Little was next for Fort Mill with a goal in the 12th minute and then exactly midway through the second half Sophia Giarrizzi scored to make it 5-0 for the Jackets.

Three minutes after Giarrizzi’s goal, Dylan Harder scored for Fort Mill and then Elizabeth Patete would score in the 29th minute of the second half for the final goal of the match.
