Fort Mill’s Griffin Tarver tees off on the 15th hole at Chester Golf Club during the Region 3-5A tournament Monday.

All three local golf teams miss out on a Region title, but will all be playing next week in their respective Upper State championships.

In the Region 3-5A tournament at Chester Golf Club, Fort Mill came in second and Nation Ford was third behind region winner Boiling Springs. Boiling Springs shot a 289 as a team on the 18-hole one-day tournament as all the teams battled rain and wet conditions to try and put forth low scores.

Fort Mill was 20 strokes behind Boiling Springs with a 309 and Nation Ford shot a 321. Gaffney was fourth with a 328 as all four will be moving on to the 5A Upper State championship Monday, May 10, which will also be at Chester Golf Club.

The Jackets were led by Griffin Tarver, who shot a 67 (31-36) and was five under and missed winning the tournament by one stroke over Boiling Spring’s Zach Phillips, who was the medalist with a 66. Following Tarver’s 67 was a 76 (36-40) from Bryce Wittmer and a pair of 83s from Keegan Brown (40-43) and Cam Baker (41-42). Both Tarver and Wittmer made the All-Region golf team.

Nation Ford was led by a 73 (35-38) from Gabe Schmitz, who was one over for his round, and also named to the All-Region team. He was followed with a 77 (37-40) from Ben Mills and an 84 (42-42) from Ben Wakefield. Colby McCaskill finished the Falcons scoring with an 87 (45-42).

In the Region 3-4A tournament at Lancaster Golf Club, host school Lancaster won the 18-hole, one-day tournament with a 319 as a team. Catawba Ridge was second with a 328 to qualify for the 4A Upper State Championship next Monday, May 10, which will be held at Fort Mill Golf Club. South Pointe and York finished third and fourth respectively to qualify as well.

Catawba Ridge was led by a 74 (37-37) from OT Mitchell, who was two over for the tournament. Nolan Will had a round of 77 (37-40) to follow Mitchell’s score. Hunter Warren shot an 86 (47-39) and Parrish Fox added a 91 (48-43) to finish the round for the Copperheads.
