Fort Mill’s El DesErmia throws a pitch during the game Tuesday night against Blythewood.

One big inning for the Blythewood Bengals led to them picking up a win over the Fort Mill softball team Tuesday.

Blythewood scored eight runs in the top of the sixth inning and 11 of their 12 runs over two innings to beat Fort Mill 12-1. The loss drops the Jackets to 8-3 on the season and 1-3 in Region 3-5A. The loss was the second straight for Fort Mill.

Fort Mill allowed 13 hits and made four errors in the game. Offensively, the Jackets struggled as well getting just five hits in the game.

“We have had that quicksand mentality,” said Fort Mill head coach Will Jameson. “The more you move around the more you sink. We talked about that before the game actually. Again, playing a good ball game and that one inning comes up and we make one mistake and that mistake turns into another and another.”

Blythewood scored first in the top of the third, but Fort Mill came right back in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game as both Vicki Lott and El DesErmia each singled in the inning. DesErmia would eventually score on an error to tie the game.

The Bengals would then crack the game open in the fifth with three runs to make it 4-1 as they scored off four hits in the inning and a Fort Mill error.

After Fort Mill couldn’t answer in the bottom of the fifth, Blythewood then scored eight runs in the top of the sixth off six hits and several errors.

Leading Fort Mill at the plate was Lott and DesErmia, who each went 2-3. DesErmia took the loss pitching for the Jackets.

Up next for Fort Mill is Rock Hill on Thursday, March 30 as they host the Bearcats and then they travel to Union County Friday, March 31.
