
LEXINGTON – The Lexington Wildcats outscored the Fort Mill Lady Jackets in overtime to win the pink bracket in the Christmas Classic at Lexington High School.
The Wildcats outscored Fort Mill 9-2 in the extra period to get a 60-53 win.
“We did a good job rebounding, we just had too many missed opportunities,” said Fort Mill head coach Nathan Wruble.
Lexington used most of the extra period to keep the ball away from the Jackets. Fort Mill hit just 1-of-6 shots in overtime.
Fort Mill hit the first two baskets of the game in the first quarter, but then got into foul trouble early in the first quarter. Lexington roared back to go up 10-5, while the Jackets struggled at the foul line going just 3-of-10 in the quarter.
Fort Mill was able to get points in transition allowing them to catch up with Lexington and tie the game at 10. The Wildcats ended the first quarter on a 6-1 run.
Fort Mill opened the second quarter on an 8-0 run of their own to regain the lead. Lexington was able to keep pace shortly after and the two teams started trading the lead.
The Wildcats then went on a 7-0 run to get a six-point advantage on the Jackets. Fort Mill however was able to chip away at that lead a little before the half trailing by just three at 29-26.
Fort Mill opened the second half on a 4-0 run before Lexington called a timeout. The Wildcats quickly tied the game at 32 soon after the timeout.
The teams started trading baskets with neither team being able to get a run going. Lexington took a small two-point lead to the final period.
The Wildcats stayed a step ahead as Fort Mill struggled to stop Lexington in transition. The Jackets were able to keep pace, despite having a hard time stopping the Wildcats on defense. The two teams eventually went into overtime tied at 51.
Kate Marker led Fort Mill with 18 points, while the Jackets dropped to 7-6 on the season.
