The Fort Mill Yellow Jackets girls’ basketball team didn’t get off to the start they wanted to falling in the opening round of the Copperhead Basketball Classic Wednesday.

Fort Mill lost to Parkwood 64-49 as Jada Chambliss led with 17 points in the loss for the Jackets. Fort Mill struggled from the opening tip as they managed just four first quarter points, as Parkwood took a 16-4 lead after one period.

The Jackets played better in the second quarter by getting better looks at the basket in driving to the hole. Fort Mill struggled with turnovers the majority of the game as Parkwood took a 35-16 lead to the locker room at the half.

Fort Mill played better in the second half, as Chambliss scored seven of her 17 in the third, but defensively the Jackets weren’t able to hold Parkwood at bay. Parkwood took a 53-30 lead into the fourth quarter.

The Jackets did outscore Parkwood 19-11 in the fourth quarter as they fell to 6-6 overall on the season. Fort Mill will now take on Bessemer City in the consolation side of the bracket.

Catawba Ridge boys 72, North Gaston 25

The Catawba Ridge boys cruised to a 72-25 win over North Gaston to advance to the semi-finals of the Copperhead Basketball Classic.

Catawba Ridge had three players score in double figures as Lance Barnes led the way with 20 points. Landon Foley added 13 points and Owen Elliott dropped in 12 points in the win.

Catawba Ridge improved to 10-2 overall on the season and will play Fairfield-Central in the semi-finals Thursday.

Catawba Ridge girls 64, Harding 32

The Catawba Ridge girls won their opening round game against Harding University 64-32 to advance to the semi-finals of the Copperhead Basketball Classic.

The Copperheads are now 8-3 overall on the season and will play Porter Ridge Thursday.
