Two straight wins by the Fort Mill girls’ tennis team puts them heading in the right direction.
The Jackets beat Rock Hill 5-1 and Clover 6-0 to improve to 2-1 on the season, playing three consecutive matches in three days.
Against Rock Hill, Fort Mill was led by No. 1 singles player Madison McCarty, who won 6-3, 7-6. At No. 2 singles Katie Pierson won for the Jackets picking up the win due to an injury when her opponent retired.
Fort Mill lost at No. 3 singles, but won three straight matches to clinch the win. Rachel Templeton won at No. 4 singles for the Jackets 6-4, 6-2 and Bristol Kershaw won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 5 singles. In the lone doubles match, Clara Lake and Kate Hill won 6-2, 6-2.
The Clover match was a little tougher for Fort Mill despite the 6-0 win. Three of those matches went to third set tiebreakers.
McCarty won handily in No. 1 singles 6-2, 6-1, while Pierson battled back to win in three sets. She dropped the first set 0-6, but then came back to win 7-5, 1-0 (10-6).
Sophie Bennett won 7-5, 6-2 in No. 3 singles and Kershaw won 6-2, 6-2 in No.5 singles in straight sets. The other two three set matches came in No. 4 singles and in the doubles match. At No. 4 singles, Templeton won 5-7, 6-4, 1-0 (10-6) and then Lake and Hill won 4-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10-5).
Fort Mill now has four straight home matches on their schedule with their next one being Sept. 10 against Boiling Springs.
