Catawba Ridge pitcher Caden Glauber powered the Copperheads on the mound and at the plate to a game one win in the Upper State championship series.

The Copperheads beat the Indian Land Warriors 5-1 in game one at Indian Land High on Tuesday, May 20. Game two is scheduled for Thursday, May 22 at Catawba Ridge as they can wrap up the series with a win. The Copperheads improved to 22-8-1 on the season with the win.

Catawba Ridge struck first in the top of the first with Ethan Solnick starting things off with a single. Britton Nash doubled scoring Solnick just four batters into the game.

In the third inning, the Copperheads offense kept things going with four straight hits. Sam Schwamb singled, followed by singles from Nash, Bryce Meil and a two-run single from Glauber to put Catawba Ridge up 3-0.

The Warriors threatened in the bottom of the third getting two runners on base in Johnny Compton and Alex Blanchette with back-to-back singles, but Glauber worked his way out of the situation.

In the fifth inning, Meil doubled for the Copperheads, but they were not able to get him home to score before Indian Land could get out of the inning.

Indian Land struggled to figure out Glauber for most of the game. The Warriors finally were able to score in the bottom of the sixth inning. After Joseph Rutledge reached on an error, Cole Gutmann singled and Cole Dombkowski drove in Rutledge to put the Warriors on the scoreboard. Glauber was able to again get through the inning despite the small hiccup.

Catawba Ridge got that run back and another one in the top of the seventh. An error allowed Jack Provenzano to reach base as he was driven in later in the inning by Meil on a single. Glauber singled driving in Ian Babcock, who was courtesy running for Sam Schwamb, who reached on an intentional walk.

Glauber finished the game going all seven innings allowing one run on six hits while walking one and striking out three. At the plate, he went 2-4 with three RBIs. Meil went 3-4 with an RBI and Nash went 2-4 with an RBI.
