Nation Ford’s Tori Baldino returns a ball during her match at Catawba Ridge Tuesday afternoon.

The Nation Ford girls’ tennis team opened the 2022 season with a 6-0 win over rivals Catawba Ridge.

The match was the season opener for both teams as Nation Ford took the match in straight sets. The closest aspect of the match was No. 2 doubles play with the Falcons’ Ansley McDonald and Alexa Brenner getting the win 6-1, 7-5 in over Nala Uter and Sydney Biggers.

Nation Ford’s Tori Baldino won at No. 1 singles 6-2, 6-0 over Lilly Lesperance. Baldino is a seventh grader playing at the varsity level for the Falcons. Catawba Ridge is playing with a new lineup as well having to replace their No. 1-5 singles players.

The Falcons have three sophomores on their team including their No. 2, No. 3 and No. 5 singles players. Lauren Padgett won at No. 2 singles for Nation Ford with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Katherine Koehl and Ava Baldino won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3 singles for the Falcons over Mallory McCart.

The oldest player on the Falcons’ squad is junior Isabella Neff, who won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 4 singles over Ava King. Eva Arnautovic won 6-1, 6-1 over Eve Kelly at No. 5 singles for Nation Ford.

Nation Ford will take on Charlotte Catholic next week and Catawba Ridge will travel to Fort Mill Thursday.

Golf

The Catawba Ridge girls golf team opened their season at Fort Mill beating the Jackets by a score of 273-292. The match was a home match for Fort Mill being played at the Cove at Tega Cay Golf Club.

Leading the way for the Copperheads was Katherine Mann with a score of 35. She was followed by a 43 from Eileen Zeoli and a 44 from Kate Gilmer. Reagan Lynch and Ella Hill each shot a 48 for Catawba Ridge.

For Fort Mill, Mackenzie Finn led with a 42. She was followed by a 45 from Cayla Cappuzzo and a 49 from Sam Benton. Caroline Player rounded the scoring out for the Jackets with a 50.

Catawba Ridge is next scheduled to take on Fort Mill and Northwestern Thursday at Waterford Golf Club.
