With a win Thursday night, the Catawba Ridge volleyball team can lock up a Region 3-4A title.

The Copperheads are undefeated with two region matches left. They will host Lancaster Thursday night at The Arena and with a win will secure the region title. Catawba Ridge is 6-0 in the region. They will still have to face Indian Land Oct. 5 to finish out region play. The next closest teams in the region are both Indian Land and South Pointe, who each have two losses. Catawba Ridge is now 14-7 overall on the season.

Copperheads’ head coach Alicia Lisee said the team has been talking a lot about coming together.

“We had a lot of discussions on team bonding and things are coming in to place,” she said.

That bonding experience was evident Tuesday as the Copperheads swept the York Cougars 3-0 (25-18, 25-13, 25-1). Catawba Ridge controlled the first two sets for the most part, but were about as dominate as a team can be in the third set allowing just one point from York.

In the opening set, Catawba Ridge scored first, but then fell behind 5-2 to the Cougars. The Copperheads battled back and scored nine of the next 10 points and took a 11-6 advantage leading to a York time out.

Out of the time out, Catawba Ridge kept their foot on the gas and continued to pull away from York leading to another Cougar time out. The second break for York didn’t help much as Catawba Ridge wrapped up the set 25-18.

York scored first to open the second set, but again, momentum was fully in the Copperheads’ corner to start as they went up 9-3. York battled back and pulled within two at 11-9 before a Catawba Ridge time out. The Copperheads made the needed adjustments and started to pull away out of the time out for a 25-13 win.

In the third set, Catawba Ridge nearly had a shutout. The Copperheads jumped out to a 4-0 lead before York scored. Leading 4-1, Catawba Ridge would then proceed to score 20 consecutive points to get the 25-1 third set win, despite York taking two time outs in the set to try and slow their momentum. Ariel Bryant served 20 of the 25 points in the third set for Catawba Ridge. Katie Lammers had seven kills and Marissa Fakes had 23 kills in the match to lead the way for the Copperheads.
