The Catawba Ridge boys’ volleyball team swept the Boiling Springs Bulldogs to win their home opener.

The Copperheads won 3-0 (25-19, 25-5, 25-16) and are now 4-1 on the season.

“We have a lot of seniors and are pretty confident going into this season,” said Catawba Ridge head coach Ross Lisee. “I didn’t know what to expect today. I just wanted to focus on us.”

The opening set was a back-and-forth battle between the two teams as neither side was able to get an advantage.

Both teams traded points and the lead before Catawba Ridge called a timeout trailing 9-8.

Out of the timeout, the Copperheads were able to take a small 13-10 lead and hold Boiling Springs at bay by getting kills. Catawba Ridge pushed their lead to 16-12 before a Bulldogs timeout.

The timeout for Boiling Springs didn’t help as Catawba Ridge went up 19-12 and the Bulldogs took their second timeout of the set.

The Copperheads finished off the first set by keeping the momentum to go up 1-0.

Catawba Ridge started the second set as strong as they finished the first set going up 6-0 to open and forcing Boiling Springs into a timeout.

Out of the timeout, the Copperheads would go up 8-0 before the Bulldogs scored.

Catawba Ridge grew stronger as the set went up going up 15-3 with strong serves. Boiling Springs struggled with their returns by being a little too forceful and hitting it past the back line. The Copperheads at one point in the set rattled off 12 consecutive points.

Boiling Springs started the third set 5-2 after having a lengthy talk between the second and third set.

Catawba Ridge was able to put together a run and tied the set at 10. From there, the Copperheads rattled off five of six points to go up 15-11 before a Bulldogs timeout.

Catawba Ridge kept the advantage during the set and went up 19-13 before another Boiling Springs timeout.

The Copperheads came out of the timeout and finished off the set to sweep the match.

Up next for Catawba Ridge is a match at Fort Mill High to open Region 3-5A play on Tuesday, Sept. 2.
