It wasn’t as pretty as they were hoping for, but the Fort Mill wrestling team opened the season with a dual win over the Lexington Wildcats.
Fort Mill won 42-29 and surged ahead in the lower weight classes.
“A win is a positive thing, but we have a lot of work to do,” said Fort Mill wrestling head coach Adam Marullo. “We gave up a lot of late scores. We have got to get better.”
Lexington took the first match at 190-pounds with a second period pin and then the second match at 215-pounds with a third period pin.
Jonathan Dasilva then won at heavyweight for Fort Mill to get on the board with a first period pin.
The Jackets pulled within one as Brody Harris got a 15-0 tech fall at 106-pounds to make it 12-11. Luke Van Beynum then gave Fort Mill the lead at 17-11 with a first period pin at 113-pounds.
Fort Mill kept things rolling at 120-pounds with a second period pin by Jacob Nally and a first period pin by Tucker Gibson at 132-pounds. Sandwiched in between their wins was a 7-6 decision by Lexington at 126-pounds.
Lincoln Greene grabbed a 15-0 tech fall at 138-pounds for Fort Mill to push their lead to 34-15 and the Jackets grabbed another tech fall with a 19-2 win by Jayden Nguyen at 144-pounds.
Lexington would stay in the match with a win at 150-pounds. Despite the loss at that weight class, Fort Mill mathematically clinched the match, as the Wildcats won the next two weight classes.
Fort Mill finished off the dual with a 12-8 decision by Mason Metcalf at 170-pounds.
The Jackets now head to the Southern Slam this weekend at Eastside High School.
