The Catawba Ridge basketball teams bounced back in Region 3-4A play after getting swept in their last game to roll through the York Cougars.

Both the boys’ and girls’ teams won by more than 40 points over York as they had no trouble righting the ship after struggling last week against South Pointe.

The Copperhead boys won 83-36 to improve to 4-2 in region play and 19-4 overall. Catawba Ridge had five players score in double figures as Tyler France and Tyler Kuhns each scored 14 points to lead the Copperheads. Landon Foley added 13 points and Jacob Stevens dropped in 11 points. Trio Belton finished with 10 points in the win.

Catawba Ridge had no trouble shaking off the loss against South Pointe.

“The guys were a little deflated, but they bounced back,” said Copperheads’ head coach Brett Childers. “They went back to work. They still have goals to accomplish.”

The Copperheads were without Zyan Hager who missed the game with a minor injury and Carter Hendrick rolled his right ankle in the second quarter and didn’t play the rest of the game. Catawba Ridge started slow scoring the first two buckets, but York quickly tied the game at 4-4 before Childers took a time out. Whatever he said worked, as Catawba Ridge went on a 7-0 run to go up 11-4 before York took a time out.

Catawba Ridge took a small lead to the second quarter and again opened on a run to go up 21-7. The Copperheads were quick in transition and easily got to the basket to shoot high percentage shots. Catawba Ridge outscored York 26-7 in the period and took a commanding 41-14 lead to the locker room.

The third quarter was just as effective for the Copperheads as they dropped in 24 points and again took advantage of York’s poor interior defense. Kuhns scored nine of his 14 points in the third quarter and Catawba Ridge took a 65-27 lead into the fourth quarter.

Girls team pours on the offense

The Catawba Ridge girls won 64-13 and improved to 5-1 in region play and 18-2 overall. The Copperheads had four players in double figures as Skyla Tuthill led with 23 points. Makailah Davis scored 11 points and both Kiley McManemin and Brielle Windisch each added 10 points in the win.

Catawba Ridge was able to shake off their only region loss to South Pointe by taking their frustrations out on York.

“Anytime you lose its how you respond,” said Catawba Ridge head coach Sheridan Pressley. “We worked hard and got back to the fundamentals. We just have to be who we are.”

Both teams started slow, as Catawba Ridge missed their first five shots of the game. But once they got going, they didn’t look back as they scored the first 14 points of the game and led 23-3 after the first quarter.

The second quarter was more of the same as Tuthill led the Copperheads with 16 first half points including four 3-pointers to give them a 32-point lead at the half. In the third quarter, Catawba Ridge outscored York 17-2 to pretty much close the book on the Cougars.

Up next for Catawba Ridge is a game against Lancaster Friday at the Arena starting with the girls’ game at 6 p.m.
