Athletes at Catawba Ridge High go through stretches earlier in June when workouts first started. A member of the Copperheads football program has tested positive for COVID-19. It is unsure if that person is a coach or a player. The person’s identity has not been released.

A second positive COVID-19 test has been confirmed within the Fort Mill School District athletic program.

The second confirmed test involves the Catawba Ridge High football program. It is unknown if the positive test comes from a coach or a player. The identity of the individual has been kept private.

“The district has been notified that an individual involved with the football program at Catawba Ridge High School tested positive for COVID-19,” said Joe Burke, district spokesman. “As per district protocols, we have notified anyone who may have come into direct contact with the individual who tested positive. At this time, football practices for athletes and coaches that did not have direct contact with the individual are allowed to continue.”

Catawba Ridge athletes were conducting workouts Tuesday morning, July 1 at their campus.

This is the second positive test within the district’s athletics program within the past two weeks. There was a positive test involving the Fort Mill football team causing the team to miss the entire week of June 22-26 while players and coaches were tested for the coronavirus.

Many school districts around the state have shutdown summer workouts for their football programs due to the increase in COVID-19 cases. At least six school districts in the Midlands area around Columbia have stopped workouts. On top of those schools, a dozen other counties have all either delayed the start of their workouts or stopped them all together. The Fort Mill School District started their summer workouts June 15.

On June 30, there was a record 1,741 new COVID-19 infections within the state, according to the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control.
