Post 43’s Carter Cox looks to turn a double play against North Augusta during Sunday’s game.

SUMTER – The Fort Mill Post 43 Junior American Legion team moved on to the third round of the state tournament at Riley Park in Sumter with a 13-1 win over North Augusta Sunday night.

Post 43 opened the game up with a five run first inning and added a six run fourth inning as both Lane Ross and Rylee Ashworth drove in four runs each in the game. Ross went 3-3 with a double and Ashworth with 2-3 with a double.

On the mound, Drew Brink got his first start of the year and pitched a complete game throwing five innings and allowing one run on four hits without allowing a walk and striking out six.

“Drew threw a hell of a game,” said Post 43 Juniors head coach Michael Lewis. “He really did a good job. He hit a lot of good spots.”

Both Ross and Ashworth each had RBI singles in the opening inning after North Augusta took a small 1-0 lead after the top of the first. Post 43 got just two hits in the first inning, but was aided by three North Augusta errors in the game.

Post 43 got the second inning started much like the first as Carter Cox and Luke Keller hit back-to-back singles. Ross singled in both Cox and Keller as well to give Fort Mill a 7-1 lead after two innings.

Fort Mill went in order in the third inning but so did North Augusta. North Augusta threatened in the fourth some, but Brink worked his way out of a jam. Then in the Post 43 half of the fourth inning, they scored six runs on three hits. Cox started the inning off with a single, as both Ross and Ashworth doubled.

“It was a big day for Lane and Carter,” Lewis said. “Rylee had a couple of big hits.”

The win put Fort Mill Post 43 at 18-0 on the year. They will now face West Florence on day three of the tournament at 7 p.m. and with a win could move on to the semi-finals.
