Fort Mill’s Lydia Laney looks to score one of her six goals against Nation Ford Monday night.

A back-and-forth battle turned to a runaway win for the Fort Mill girls lacrosse team Monday night against Nation Ford.

Fort Mill won 15-5 over the Falcons and improved to 4-2 on the season, while Nation Ford dropped to  4-4 overall.

The Jackets scored 13 unanswered goals between the first and second half in the match after trailing 4-2 with about 11 minutes left in the opening half.

Nation Ford opened the game scoring just 15 seconds into play as Georgia Sharpless scored the first of her four goals in the game. Fort Mill scored on the next face off to tie the game as Erin Hennessey scored the first of her three goals to tie the match.

Sharpless added two more goals to put the score at 3-1 for the Falcons, before Grace Sandler scored the first of her three goals for Fort Mill.

Nation Ford’s Kristen Knauff scored for the Falcons to make it 4-2, prompting a time out for the Jackets. After the time out, Fort Mill found a new intensity and never looked back.

“We had a slow start,” said Fort Mill head coach Kirsten Terry. “It all came down to who wanted it more at the beginning of the game. Working from behind is more motivating for us. We have a lot of work to be done.”

Lydia Laney scored the next three goals for Fort Mill, as she would lead them with six goals, and put them up 5-4 with just under four minutes later in the first half. Taylor Wilcox scored two of her three goals to end the first half for the Jackets with them leading 7-4.

Fort Mill outscored Nation Ford 8-1 in the second half.

“Lacrosse is a game of runs,” said Nation Ford head coach Emily Daly. “They held us in the second half. We took our foot off the gas.”

Fort Mill will next head to Blythewood Thursday, March 16 to play, while Nation Ford won’t play again until Thursday as well when they travel to Clover.
