While the Fort Mill boys’ basketball team was able to grab a holiday tournament title recently, they weren’t the only ones hooping it up over the winter break.

The Nation Ford boys’ basketball team won the second annual Founders Federal Credit Union Christmas Tournament at Blacksburg High School for the second consecutive year on Tuesday, Dec. 23.

Nation Ford beat Lake City 76-40 to open the tournament on Dec. 22 and then came back in the finals the next day to beat York 80-65 to win the tournament. The Falcons are now 10-3 on the season and will return to action, again on the road, on Friday, Jan. 2 at River Bluff.

The Lady Falcons were on the girls’ side of the same tournament and won 51-42 against host Blacksburg on Dec. 22. They then fell to Hillcrest 53-43 on day two. The Lady Falcons also return to action on Jan. 2 at River Bluff as they currently sit at 5-7 overall on the season.

The Catawba Ridge boys’ basketball team went 1-2 in the Big Red Box Holiday Invitational at Irmo High School Dec. 29-31. The Copperheads won their tournament opener by beating Lugoff-Elgin 56-54 and were led by 17 points each from Isaiah Thomas and Kevin Butler.

In the semi-finals on Dec. 30, Catawba Ridge lost 54-51 at the buzzer in overtime to host Irmo. Mark Caslaru led with 18 points and Butler had 16 points in the loss.

The Copperheads played the Lincoln Railsplitters out of New York and fell 54-43 on Dec. 31. Preston Heffner led with 15 points and Caslaru added 12 points in the loss. Catawba Ridge is now 9-4 on the season and returns to action on Jan. 2 at Northwestern High School to reopen Region 3-5A play.

The Fort Mill Lady Jackets also played this past week in a three-day tournament in North Carolina. Fort Mill played in the Carolina Christmas Classic at Northwest Guilford High School in Greensboro, N.C.

The Lady Jackets went 1-2 overall falling on the opening day one Saturday, Dec. 27 to Georgia based Archer High School 80-54. They blew out Olympic High School from Charlotte 51-12 on Monday, Dec. 29, but then fell to Charlotte Catholic 43-41 on Dec. 30 to end the tournament.

Fort Mil is now 6-9 overall on the season and will return to Region 3-5A play on Jan. 2 by hosting Clover.
