Softball in a glove at home plate

It was an up and down day for Catawba Ridge athletics Saturday as the 4A baseball and softball playoffs got underway with a win and a loss by the Copperheads.

The Copperheads softball team won beating Greer 11-0, while the Catawba Ridge baseball team lost to Laurens 4-1. The win by Catawba Ridge softball was the first in program history.

In the softball game at Greer, Jenna Gardner hit a solo home run in the top of the second to break a scoreless tie.  In the third, Audrey Wilson added an RBI single to make it 2-0.

Catawba Ridge cruised until the fifth inning where they added some insurance runs as Georgia Burford hit a two-run single and Gardner added a two-run double. Mia Kovacs and Lexi Haskett both added RBI singles to put the Copperheads up 8-0.

In the sixth inning, Kirsten Reynolds drove in a run to make it 9-0 and then in the seventh Lauren Gray and Janelle Ilacqua added runs as well to the Copperheads score.

Catawba Ridge will now head to Travelers Rest Monday, who beat AC Flora, for another road game, this time starting at 6 p.m. The Copperheads are now 19-7 on the season.

Baseball

The Copperheads baseball team managed just two hits and made three errors in its 4-1 loss on the road Saturday.

Tyler Levy and Trevor Testerman were the two players who got hits for Catawba Ridge, while Greyson Wild got the loss on the mound. Wild went four innings allowing four runs on eight hits while striking out four and walking one.

Catawba Ridge scored in the first inning but then didn’t make anything else happen the rest of the game. Laurens tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the second and then added three more runs in the fourth inning to get the lead.

The Copperheads will now travel to Easley Monday in an elimination game. Catawba Ridge is now 15-11-1 on the season thus far.
