The Fort Mill girls’ volleyball team played their final regular season home match of the season night as against the Northwestern Trojans.
It was already a celebratory atmosphere since it was also senior night, but the raucous crowd really filled the building with a ton of energy as they won 3-0 (25-17, 25-12, 25-16).
Fort Mill shed the senior night pomp and circumstance by taking an early lead versus the Trojans. The Yellow Jackets were trying to avenge a loss at Northwestern roughly a month ago. Fort Mill had a 12-point lead in the first set forcing Northwestern burned both of their timeouts in short fashion. The Trojans did mount a bit of a comeback, but Fort Mill head coach Erin Kayton burned a timeout once Northwestern had cut the lead to five.
Whatever was said to them in the huddle worked to perfection as her Yellow Jackets roared back to easily win set one 25-17.
The second set began with Northwestern on the front foot, however, as the Trojans tried to put a dent in the spirited Fort Mill crowd. The rally was short lived as Fort Mill began to dominate on their way to winning set two 25-12.
The third set was almost a carbon copy of set two as Fort Mill won it 25-16 to cruise to a 3-0 over Northwestern.
The Yellow Jackets, with the win, improve to 7-6 overall but more importantly 5-5 in Region 3-5A play. Fort Mill has the rest of the week off. Their next match will be next Tuesday, Oct. 14 at Indian Land and then at Nation Ford to close out the regular season.
Fort Mill’s play has really improved since the upset loss at Northwestern.
“They’re playing together as a team, we have Grier (McNeely) back,” Kayton said. “I felt like they were more relaxed. I also asked her about it being Senior Night and her response was, “it was fun…it’s Senior Night, it’s their night let them go have fun.”
If things fall the right way, Fort Mill could get a home playoff match once the postseason begins October 22.
“I think they would love it because a lot of seniors said, ‘I don’t want this to be my last match in this gym,’” Kayton said.
