The Catawba Ridge Copperheads opened their 2020 cross-country season beating four other teams on the Anne Springs Close Greenway.

Catawba Ridge girls scored 31 points in beating Indian Land, South Pointe, York and Lancaster. Indian Land was second with 40 points, followed by 73 points from South Pointe, 114 points from York and 118 points from Lancaster.

Maddy Mack for the Copperheads led the girls team winning the race in 21:16. Hayla Banish was fifth overall for Catawba Ridge in 23:59 and Hunter Mattes was seventh overall in 24:32. Phoebe Corn came in eighth in 24:34 and Talia Gluff rounded out the top five for the Copperheads in 10th in 24:38.

On the boys’ side, Sam Rich won the race with a time of 16:00 to lead the scoring for Catawba Ridge. The boys’ won with a score of 22, followed by an 83 from Lancaster, an 85 from York, a 94 from South Pointe and a 110 from Indian Land.

After Rich’s time, Josh Silverman came in second overall in 17:50 followed by Caden Westover in 17:56 in third. Spencer Predmore came in at 19:20 in eighth and Jackson Rozelle finished in 11th in 19:53 to finish the scoring for Catawba Ridge.

The Copperheads will now head to the Trojan Relays Saturday at Northwestern.

Tennis

Catawba Ridge improved to 4-0 on the tennis courts beating Indian Land 5-1. The one loss in the match was the first loss in any match by the Copperheads this season. Sarah Taylor led Catawba Ridge winning 6-1, 6-0 in No. 1 singles and Sara Maleady won 6-0, 6-0 in No. 2 singles action. Both Aiyana Uter, at No. 4 singles and Evangeline Kelly, at No. 5 singles won 6-1, 6-1. Emily Taylor and Mallory McCart teamed up in No. 2 doubles to win 7-5, 6-2.

The Nation Ford Falcons beat Gaffney earlier in the week to improve to 3-0 on the season with a 6-0 victory.  All six matches were straight set victories for Nation Ford, led by Vanessa Cardona, who won 6-2, 6-3 in No. 1 singles. Alexandra Cardona won at No. 2 singles 6-3, 6-1 and Tanvi Sikka won at No. 3 singles 6-3, 6-4. Both Meera Patel and Neha Arunprakash won at No. 4 and No. 5 singles respectively by similar 6-1, 6-0 scores. Lauren Padgett and Isabella Neff teamed up for No. 2 doubles to get the 6-2, 6-2 win for Nation Ford.

Golf

The Nation Ford Falcons picked up two wins in non-region action to even their record at 2-2 on the season by beating Northwestern and South Pointe Thursday at Waterford Golf Club. The Falcons were led by Vivian Harris, who shot a 47. Her score was followed by a 49 from Sara McCaskill and a 55 from Fharren Coleman. Katie Griggs rounded out the scoring for the Falcons with a 58.
