The Catawba Ridge boys’ basketball program has hired Andrew Griggs as their interim head coach for the upcoming season.

Griggs, 30, has been on the sidelines at Catawba Ridge entering his sixth year serving as head ninth grade boys coach and head JV coach as times, as well as an assistant under Brett Childers, who resigned from the position back in June for personal reasons.

“I have always wanted to be a varsity coach,” he said. “I didn’t think it would happen so soon, but life comes at you fast. I am excited about moving forward with everybody.”

Catawba Ridge leadership approached Griggs about the interim coaching position as athletic director Rick Lewis said he wanted to keep the hire for the 2026-2027 season in house to keep the continuity with the team.

“I think he is going to do good,” Lewis said. “The kids have responded to him. They like him. Our numbers are good. There is a new energy. I am excited to see what they will do. He has been preparing himself for when the opportunity comes.”

Griggs is already on campus at Catawba Ridge as a school counselor and has been with the Fort Mill School District for seven years. He is from the area just over the Catawba River bridge in Rock Hill. Griggs went to Rock Hill High School and lives in Rock Hill.

He went to the University of South Carolina for his undergraduate degree in P.E. and also got his Masters degree in school counseling from the college as well.

Griggs said he is hopeful for the season to be one of continuing to build the program.

“We have a great community around Catawba Ridge,” he said. “I know we don’t have the history of Fort Mill and Nation Ford has been around significantly longer than we have, but I hope to build a program that the community is proud of and comes out and supports. I want to be the big ticket on that side of town.”

Griggs said he wants to maximize the team’s strengths this upcoming season.

“If I have a team that likes to play up tempo, we will play up tempo,” he said. “If we think we are better at controlling the pace, than I will do that as well. Offensively, I am big on spacing. It is hardest to guard when the defense isn’t set. So, try to get the guys good spacing on the floor.”
