A slow start by the Catawba Ridge Copperheads boys’ lacrosse team, made it difficult for them against the Spartanburg Vikings.
Spartanburg won easily 17-4 as Catawba Ridge dropped to 0-3 on the season.
Neither team was able to get their offense established in the early going. Spartanburg slipped the goal in about 2:30 minutes into the first quarter to take a 1-0 lead. The initial goal seemed to open the flood gates for the Vikings as they scored two more times in the next two minutes. Catawba Ridge struggled with winning the face off and keeping possession when they did have the ball.
The Copperheads finally got possession about midway through the opening period, but could not penetrate the Spartanburg defense as they weren’t kept without being able to get a shot off before another Catawba Ridge turnover.
The Vikings would add another goal before the end of the first quarter, but Catawba Ridge was also able to breakthrough with a goal from Caleb Williams with five seconds left in the quarter.
Spartanburg opened the second quarter scoring 63 seconds into play. Turnovers continued to be an issue in the second quarter for the Copperheads. Because of the turnovers, Catawba Ridge was unable to find any rhythm and consistency in their offense.
The Copperheads played well through the first nine minutes of the second quarter holding Spartanburg to just two goals. However, the final three minutes the Vikings were incredibly strong scoring back-to-back goals within eight seconds of each other. Spartanburg went into the half up 9-1.
The Viking started the second half scoring just over 90 seconds into the third quarter. They kept that momentum going about a minute later by adding their 11th goal of the game.
After seven consecutive goals by Spartanburg, Catawba Ridge was able to score with 4:22 left in the third quarter as Williams scored his second goal of the game. The Copperheads played better in the third quarter as Will Gambrill scored his goal with 2:22 left. However, Spartanburg had such a huge lead, it was hard for them to make up any ground. The Vikings would add a couple more goals before the end of the third quarter to go up 15-3 entering the final period.
Spartanburg scored about a minute into the fourth quarter and the Copperheads’ Boston Halpin scored midway through the fourth quarter.
