The Catawba Ridge Copperheads boys’ lacrosse team scored six unanswered goals in the second half to pick up a 12-4 win over the Wade Hampton Generals Thursday in game one of a boy-girl doubleheader.

The lacrosse doubleheader started with the Copperheads boys’ team and it didn’t take long for Catawba Ridge to get on the board scoring just 61 second into play with a goal from Logan Elias to open the game.

Catawba Ridge held off Wade Hampton on their opening possession and then scored their next time down the field with a goal from Boston Halpin to put them up 2-0 with nine minutes left in the opening quarter.

Wade Hampton would score but the Copperheads came right back to get a goal from Cooper Paschal with about 3:25 left in the first quarter. Paschal would score another goal as time expired in the first quarter to put Catawba Ridge up 4-1.

The Generals scored two minutes into the second quarter to cut the Copperheads lead in half.

Drew Fikis got on the board for the Copperheads about halfway through the second quarter with his first goal in the game.

Wade Hampton continued to stay on the attack scoring with 4:29 left in the half as the Copperheads struggled with catching passes and winning ground balls.

Fikis would add his second goal of the half with about three minutes left in the half, but the Generals picked up two more goals to bring the score to 6-4 at the half.

Fikis collected a hat trick to open the second half scoring at 9:44 in the third quarter. Then after winning the face-off, Catawba Ridge’s Caleb Williams scored 12 seconds later to again double up the Generals.

Catawba Ridge added another goal by Halpin, his second of the game, about 90 seconds later to give the Copperheads a comfortable five goal lead.

Fikis added a fourth goal as Catawba Ridge outscored Wade Hampton 4-0 in the third quarter to take a 10-4 lead to the final 12 minutes.

Bradey Compton scored a goal for the Copperheads with about 6:15 left in the game to extend their lead and Elias added his second goal of the game two minutes later for Catawba Ridge.

“We are still playing a lot of young guys,” said Copperheads’ boys’ head coach Mike Gambrill. “We got some good senior leadership out of Drew Fikis. We are finally putting it together.”

Catawba Ridge improved to 1-2 on the season with the win.

Lady Copperheads win in OT

The Catawba Ridge Lady Copperheads scored 53 seconds into overtime to beat Wade Hampton 13-12.

Ember Rosowski scored her fifth goal of the game clinch the win for Catawba Ridge who improved to 2-2 on the season.

“This was our best game of the season so far,” said Catawba Ridge girls’ head coach Patrick Gormley. “We are looking pretty good. Things seem to be clicking.”

The Lady Generals jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead before Rosowski put the Lady Copperheads on the board in the first quarter.

Catawba Ridge came back with the next two goals by Paige Conroy and Carleigh Conroy to get the lead, but Wade Hampton would tie the game at three before the end of the first quarter.

Paige Conroy would get her second goal of the game to open the second quarter for Catawba Ridge. Wade Hampton would then proceed to score four unanswered goals to go up 7-4 at the half.

The third quarter was beneficial for the Copperheads as they rallied to get the lead. In the second half, Paige Conroy would get the hat trick for Catawba Ridge with her third goal to cut into the Lady Generals’ lead about three minutes into the third quarter.

The two teams would start trading goals with Rosowski and Carleigh Conroy scoring their second goals of the game for the Copperheads.

Rosowski would then get a hat trick with about four minutes left in the third quarter to cut even more into the Lady Generals’ lead. Paige Conroy would tie the game at nine for the Copperheads and then put them ahead at 10-9 less than a minute later.

Catawba Ridge won the next face-off and Rosowski scored her fourth goal of the game before the Generals would add a goal near the end of the third quarter.

Lydia McCarter opened the fourth quarter with a goal for Catawba Ridge, but Wade Hampton again rallied tying the game with about two minutes left where it would eventually go into overtime.

The Catawba Ridge baseball team opened the defense of their 4A state championship with a 4-1 win over Summerville in the IP Classic in Georgetown, S.C.

The Nation Ford baseball team beat Camden 6-1 in a tournament at White Knoll to improve to 3-0.

The Nation Ford boys’ lacrosse team won 16-2 over Blythewood on the road to improve to 2-1 on the season and 2-0 in Region 3-5A.

The Nation Ford Lady Falcons lacrosse team beat Blythewood 21-8 at home to improve to 1-1 in Region 3-5A and 2-1 overall.

The Fort Mill girls’ lacrosse team fell to Cuthbertson on the road 11-9 to drop to 2-2 on the season.
