Fort Mill’s Grace Sandler looks to get to the goal during the Jackets win at Nation Ford Monday night.

A back-and-forth game turned into a Fort Mill Lady Jackets advantage with a 9-3 win over rival Nation Ford.

Fort Mill opened the game with a goal from Grace Sandler about two and half minutes into play.

Nation Ford came back about three minutes later to even the game as Catherine Barhorst scored tying the game at one. The score was her 200th career goal, the most for any Falcons boys’ or girls’ lacrosse player in school history.

“It has been a goal of mine since I was a freshman,” Barhorst said, who is committed to the University of Cincinnati. “I went over 100 assists also (this season) and want to get to 150 by the end of the season.”

That score would stand as the first quarter would end tied 1-1.

The second quarter was a battle of attrition for both schools as they traded possession, but struggled to score.

After a timeout, Fort Mill came out and scored three goals with CeCe Shia scoring twice and Taylor

Wilcox adding another goal for a 4-1 halftime lead.

“We just wanted to get our composure,” said Fort Mill head coach Kirsten Terry. “It was a sloppy first half. We are in a good spot right now.”

In the second half, Fort Mill struck first with a goal from Molly Bennett at 10:35 left in the third quarter.

Barhorst bounced back scoring for Nation Ford as both her and Bennett traded goals for their teams. Bennett and Barhorst would both secure hat tricks in the third quarter as Fort Mill led 7-3 after the period.

The Jackets opened the fourth quarter with Sandler scoring her second goal. Rylee Raiter scored for the Jackets two minutes later to extend their lead as that would be the last goal of the game.

“A lot of our failures were mostly self-inflicted,” said Nation Ford head coach Emily Daly. “I am confident they will be able to make a good playoff run.”

The win puts Fort Mill at 5-2 overall and 4-0 in Region 3-5A play, while Nation Ford dropped to 4-2 overall and 2-2 in the region.
