ROCK HILL – The Fort Mill Yellow Jackets boys’ golf team finished second in the Fleischer Invitational at the Rock Hill Country Club, with Nation Ford coming in third.
The two-day 36-hole tournament was won by Gaffney High School by two strokes as they shot a two-day total of 600 (297-303). Fort Mill was second with a 602 (302-300) and Nation Ford was just four shots back at 606 (305-301). Catawba Ridge finished ninth with a two-day total of 694 (340-354) using two flights on the different days.
Nation Ford’s Oliver LaPointe finished tied for first with Gaffney’s Ty Childers with a three-under 141. LaPointe shot a one-over 73 on Friday, April 24 to open the tournament, but came back with a four-under 68 on Saturday, April 25. Childers won in a one-hole sudden death playoff to take the individual title after the second round.
Fort Mill’s Noah Jones finished third overall with a 142 (72-70) to lead the Jackets. He was followed by a fifth-place finish from Morgan Bayko at 145 (75-70). Nick Harper was tied for 18th for Fort Mill with a 156 (79-77) and Tyson Shouse was tied for 27th with a 159 (76-83).
Besides LaPointe’s score, Nation Ford had two other golfers finish in the top 10. Connor Mills was ninth with a 151 (74-77) and Carter Smith was 10th with a 152 (76-76). James Wachtel finished the scoring for the Falcons with a 162 (82-80).
For the Copperheads on day one of the tournament, they were led by an 82 from Muller Otto, who tied for 13th overall. Carter Mitten finished tied for 22nd for Catawba Ridge with an 85, followed by an 86 from Niam Sethi, which was good enough to tie him for 24th. Roman Vasicko tied for 27th with a one-day total of 87.
On day two of the tournament for Catawba Ridge, Nate Burt finished with an 82 tying him with Otto for 13th overall. Christian Cook finished 32nd with an 88 and Ryan Gluff was tied for 33rd with a 90. Dillon White finished tied for 38th with a 94.
All three teams will next tee it up on Monday, April 27 at Chester Golf Club for the an 18-hole Region 3-5A tournament.
