
Two of the three local softball teams came away with wins before heading into spring break.
Both the Catawba Ridge Copperheads and Nation Ford Falcons picked up wins on Thursday, April 2.
Catawba Ridge beat Fort Mill 7-2 to improve to 11-8 overall and 5-2 in Region 3-5A. Fort Mill fell to 8-9 overall and 2-3 in the region.
Both teams started off strong as Catawba Ridge scored two runs in the top of the first inning off a single by Jaidyn Harris and then three consecutive walks scoring Harris. A sacrifice by Tilly Boss led to the second run of the inning for the Copperheads.
Fort Mill scored one in the bottom of the first off singles by Brooke Rosario and Elise Nordgren. A sacrifice by Mallory Moore scored Rosario to cut the Catawba Ridge lead in half.
Harris extended the Copperheads lead in the fifth with a solo home run to lead off the top of the inning.
Fort Mill added a run in the bottom of the fifth off three hits. Natalie Razum, Kennedy Cullings, and Nordgren each singled in the inning and Nordgren scored on a fielder’s choice to again cut into the Catawba Ridge lead.
The Copperheads continued to make things happen in the sixth inning by doubling their score with three more runs off a couple hits and a Fort Mill error.
Harris, Peyton Batot, and Charli Burney each got two hits for Catawba Ridge. Rosario went 2-3 for Fort Mill.
The Nation Ford softball team beat Northwestern 9-6 to improve to 13-4 overall and 5-2 in Region 3-5A.
Makayla Bess went 4-4 and Tori Baldino went 4-5 to lead Nation Ford in the win. Kailey Alston pitched five innings and struck out five for the win. Paizlei Ross pitched two innings striking out four in the process.
Nation Ford scored three runs in the top of the third, before Northwestern added two in the bottom of the inning. Both teams scored two runs in the fifth inning, before the Falcons exploded for four runs in the top of the seventh inning to surge ahead.
Baldino, Maci Ladamus and Addy Eastly each hit home runs in the game for Nation Ford. The Falcons had 14 hits in the game.
April 2 Roundup
The Nation Ford baseball team beat Rock Hill 2-1 to get a series sweep over the Bearcats with a walk-off hit in the bottom of the seventh by Noah Layton to score the game winner. Nation Ford is now 12-4 overall and 6-3 in Region 3-5A.
The Fort Mill baseball team rallied to beat Northwestern 12-11 as the Jackets scattered 14 hits. Fort Mill was led by Cooper Diehl with three hits. Fort Mill improved to 6-5 in Region 3-5A and 7-8 overall.
The Catawba Ridge baseball team fell in game three to Indian Land 8-2 and dropped to 10-6 overall and 5-4 in Region 3-5A.
The Catawba Ridge boys’ soccer team beat Fort Mill at Bob Jones Stadium 2-1 to improve to 6-1 in Region 3-5A and 9-4 overall. Fort Mill fell to 6-5 overall and 3-4 in the region.
The Nation Ford girls’ soccer team ran over Northwestern 11-0 at home to improve to 9-3 overall and 5-2 in Region 3-5A.
The Nation Ford boys’ soccer team beat Northwestern 1-0 to improve to 6-9 overall and 3-4 in Region 3-5A.
The Nation Ford boys’ tennis team beat Catawba Ridge 6-0 winning all matches in straight sets. Winning for Nation Ford was Colt Mohler 6-1, 6-1; Davis Glasco 6-1, 6-1; Shanmith Kamireddy 6-3, 6-2; Jaideep Taineni 6-2, 6-2; Finnegan Bridges 6-1, 6-1 and in doubles Josh Assaad and Ohm Patel 6-1, 6-2. Nation Ford is now 9-1 on the season and Catawba Ridge is now 7-6 overall and 5-5 in Region 3-5A.
The Catawba Ridge boys’ golf team beat both Indian Land and York in a tri-match at Edgewater Golf Club. The Copperheads are now 6-2 on the season. Catawba Ridge shot a 152 with both Indian Land and York shooting a 178. The Copperheads were led by a 37 from Muller Otto and a 38 from Carter Mitten. Christian Cook also shot a 38 for Catawba Ridge and the scoring was finished with a 39 from Niam Sethi.
Late Wednesday, the Nation Ford boys’ lacrosse team fell to Clover 15-3 on the road. The Falcons dropped to 5-7 overall and 3-3 in Region 3-5A.
