COLUMBIA – It wasn’t the top spot, but for the Catawba Ridge competitive cheerleading squad, it was a history making day.
Catawba Ridge competitive cheer team finished second in the state in the 5A Division II state championship competition on Saturday, Nov. 22 in Columbia at the Colonial Life Arena.
“It has been an overwhelming experience,” said Catawba Ridge head cheer coach Kristin Rhodes. “It has been years in the making. It has always been the goal to hear your name called out at the state finals. It is a testimony to the athletes who paved the way to get here.”
Chapin won the event with 334 points, while the Copperheads were second with 309 points. Fort Mill finished fifth with 257.5 points and Nation Ford was 11th out of the 12 teams in the event with 234 points.
The Copperheads qualified about two weeks ago and also finished second to Chapin in that qualifier as well.
Rhodes said she felt confident in her team coming into the state finals, but with cheerleading nothing is certain.
“It’s a sport you can never be too confident,” she said.
