
All three local wrestling teams had wrestlers win their weight classes in out-of-town tournaments over the weekend.
At the Southern Slam at Eastside High School, Fort Mill heavyweight Jonathan DaSilva won the 285-pound weight class pinning Haiden Cox of Science Hill in the second period. DaSilva won all four of his matches by pinfall in either the first or second period.
Fort Mill finished fourth overall out of 49 teams with 160.5 points and had several wrestlers place in the event.
Luke Van Beynum finished third at 113-pounds going 6-1 at the event and beating Buford (Ga.) Chris Metz 8-3 in the third-place match. Jacob Nally finished fifth with a 9-3 decision over Camden Strickland from Belton-Honea Path at 120-pounds. Lincoln Greene finished seventh at 138-pounds with a 4-3 decision over Philip Simmons wrestler Matthew Spignardo. Theodore Ernst finished sixth at 190-pounds falling in the fifth-place match.
At the Fury Invitational at Fountain Inn High School, Nation Ford’s Derek van Sandwyk won the 190-pound weight class by tech fall over TL Hanna’s Kavon Cole 19-1.
Nation Ford finished fifth overall with 80.5 points. They had five wrestlers place in the event.
Sulaymon Oskar lost to Fountain Inn’s Cru Hall at 175-pounds by pin in the finals. And Lorenzo Smith also fell in the finals for Nation Ford to Fountain Inn’s Xeviel Gonzalez at 215-pounds.
In the third-place matches, Danny Gilstorf won 6-3 at 144-pounds over Fountain Inn’s Jack Carnes and Easton Ruth won 15-4 over Fountain Inn’s Dacus Johnson at 106-pounds.
At Aiken High School, both Archer Rozelle and Alex Johnson won for Catawba Ridge in their respective weight classes in the Hornet Hammer tournament. Rozelle won the 157-pound weight class beating Swansea’s Chase Alley 8-6 and Johnson won at 215-pounds pinning Nathan McCary from Ninety-Six.
Catawba Ridge finished fifth with their A team with 164.5 points and had several other wrestlers’ place in the tournament. The Copperheads B-team finished 16th with 55 points.
Jacob McClure finished second at 106-pounds and Taylon Winker finished third, also at 106-pounds beating Aiken’s Colton Creswell. Angel Acosta finished third at 126-pounds with a 6-1 decision over Blythewood’s Caleb Cazares. Ethan Jones finished fifth by disqualification at 144-pounds and Clark Ostendorf finished fifth at 165-pounds with a tech fall over teammate Ryan Stukitz 19-3. Cole Stukitz also finished sixth at 150-pounds.

The Nation Ford girls’ basketball team won 70-27 over Stall High School in a game at Brookland-Cayce High School to improve to 3-2 on the season.
The Fort Mill boys’ basketball team fell to Byrnes in the Dorman Showcase at Dorman High School losing 68-64. Wallace Campbell led Fort Mill with 20 points. Fort Mill dropped to 4-1 on the season with the loss.
