Post 43’s Kyle Knoll throws a pitch during Fort Mill’s game Sunday in the NC-SC Challenge in Cherryville.

CHERRYVILLE – A rare occurrence for Fort Mill Post 43 Senior baseball team happened Sunday, as their third game in the NC-SC Challenge in Cherryville ended in a tie.

The game was stopped after seven innings tied at 3-3 against defending North Carolina state champions Fuquay Varina Post 116 because Cherryville had a league game against Rutherford County that needed to start at 7:30 p.m.

Fort Mill Post 43 was originally scheduled to start their game at 2:30 p.m., but didn’t start until 4:15 p.m. because an umpire got injured in the opening game of the day, which started at noon, and he had to be replaced before the game could resume. That game didn’t end until 3:45 p.m.

There were good and bad moments for Post 43 in the game. From a defensive standpoint, Fort Mill only made one error in the game, but also only got two hits offensively. Scott Young and Cooper Wilson each got a hit for Post 43.

Fort Mill opened the game up scoring in the top of the first with a single from Wilson. Eli Craddock would reach on a fielder’s choice, before Young would drive him in on an RBI single.

Fuquay Varina would then score two in the bottom of the third inning to take the lead. Fort Mill tied the game at 2-2 in the top of the fourth as Tyler Levy would drive in Owen Majcina, who was pinch running, on a sacrifice to tie the game.

Then in the sixth inning, Post 43 took a 3-2 lead as Majcina would score on a wild pitch in the inning. However, Fuquay Varina would come back and score on a throwing error in the bottom of the inning to once again tie the game.

Kyle Knoll got the start for Post 43 on the mound and went three and a third inning, while allowing two runs on five hits. He walked three and struck out eight. Alex Steckler pitched three and two thirds allowing a run on two hits, while walking four and striking out two.

Post 43 is now 3-7-1 overall on the season and returns to League V play Tuesday with a doubleheader at Chester Post 27.
