Fort Mill’s Colbie Wolf drives to the basket against Independence during their game on Thursday, Feb. 6.

In a solo game against the Independence Patriots of Charlotte, the Fort Mill girls’ basketball team cruised to a blowout win.

Fort Mill won 58-14 as they had eight players score in the game and four in double figures.

Lady Jackets head coach Nathan Wruble said his team has come a long way this season.

“We lost five starters from last year,” he said. “The girls took their lumps in non-conference schedule, but we schedule hard teams for a reason. The girls are excited. They are talking about the playoffs.”

Fort Mill should finish either third or fourth in Region 3-5A and could possibly host a game at the Hive.

On Thursday, Feb. 6, Fort Mill opened with an 8-0 run but the scoring slowed for both teams. The Jackets kept pace and remained in control as they would go up by six to start the second quarter.

Fort Mill used its height to get inside early in the period resulting in another good start. The Jackets defense was strong causing several problems for Independence. While those turnovers didn’t always lead to baskets, it did lead to more opportunities.

Fort Mill held Independence to just one basket in the second quarter as they outpaced them 13-2.

The Jackets opened the third quarter on a 13-0 run to go up by 30 about midway through the quarter. Fort Mill had another dominant quarter and led by 32 entering the fourth quarter.

Fort Mill kept the foot on the gas starting the fourth quarter on an 11-0 run before an Independence timeout.

The Jackets were led by Ava Shave with 13 points. Both Colbie Wolf and Kate Marker had 11 points. Saylor Heberling added 10 points.

Fort Mill is now 14-10 overall on the season. They will host Indian Land and Nation Ford next week.
