A quick start by the Fort Mill Yellow Jackets led to a convincing win over the Andrew Jackson Volunteers.

Fort Mill won 57-34 over the Vols to improve to 8-1 on the season.

“Defensively, our effort and intensity was good,” said Fort Mill boys head coach Myron Lowery. “I was real pleased. We have different guys that can score every night. That makes it hard to guard us.”

Fort Mill started the game by controlling possession in the early parts of the first quarter and went up 8-5 midway through the opening period.

Fort Mill extended their lead to 10 scoring the first four points of the second quarter off the fingertips of Wallace Campbell. The Jackets were able to push the pace in the second quarter and got to the basket by finding lanes to the hoop.

Fort Mill continued to control the first half and went into the break leading 27-15. The Jackets shot 50 percent from the field in the first half and was perfect at the charity stripe.

Both teams started the second half with not much offense. Fort Mill started attacking the basket more, which aided their offense as they would go up by 16 to start the fourth quarter.

The Jackets kept their foot on the gas pedal and went up by 20 points in the fourth quarter using the same slashing offense that got them to the basket in the third quarter.

Both teams had their best scoring quarters in the game in the fourth quarter as the Jackets outscored the Vols 19-12. Jermier Nelson led Fort Mill with 14 points. Logan Parker and Wallace Campbell each had nine points in the win.

Lady Vols pull away

The Andrew Jackson Lady Volunteers pulled away in the second quarter to go for a 53-32 win over the Lady Jackets.

Fort Mill went up early on the defending 2A state champion Lady Vols with stingy defense.

Andrew Jackson fought to get back in the game before the end of the first quarter as they went up 13-7 with the Lady Vols going on an 8-0 run.

The Lady Vols increased their defensive pressure leading to turnovers by the Jackets. Fort Mill had trouble shooting missing their first five shots. Andrew Jackson was consistent offensively and took a 24-10 lead at the half.

The second half saw both teams matching each other shot for shot in the early going.

Fort Mill was able to get to the basket better in the third quarter scoring in transition. The Jackets chip away some after Andrew Jackson had one of their better players go down with an injury in the third quarter.

The Lady Vols was able to bounce back with a 6-0 run to end the third quarter. Andrew Jackson quickly went up by 20 at the start of the fourth quarter. Tamia Watkins scored 10 of her 26 points for the Lady Vols in the fourth quarter. Zoe Williams led Fort Mill with nine points as the Jackets dropped to 5-4 on the season.
