YORK—Jamboree’s take place across South Carolina the week before the season starts. High school football teams use them as a final rehearsal before the season. A tradition for nearly 70 years it still can supply something new.

In this case a new high school, the Lake Wylie Chargers, made its on-field debut against the Fort Mill Yellow Jackets at the Bill Pate White Rose Classic at York Comprehensive High School on Aug. 14.

The Yellow Jackets bolted out of the gates, scoring on their first three drives en route to a 21-3 win on Friday night.

Big plays enabled Fort Mill to overcome seven penalties for 70 in penalties. Broden Mitcheson’s 32-yard run took the Yellow Jackets down to the Chargers 30. Harper Love then found Terrell Robinson for a 24-yard pick up to set up first and goal. Mitcheson’s 6-yard run straight up the middle put the Yellow Jackets ahead.

Mitcheson broke across from the five on the next drive to extend Fort Mill’s lead. Love’s 20-yard connection to Hudson Maxwell set up the touchdown.

Fort Mill’s biggest play of the night came on their very nice drive. Love found Jameson Terrell wide open down the near sideline, but the ball was slightly underthrown. Terrell broke one tackle, then sprinted into the end zone for the 42-yard score.

Throughout the half Fort Mill penetrated the Chargers’ backfield and made it difficult for Lake Wylie to get anything going. Lake Wylie had two scoring chances but was denied on the first. Fort Mill knocked down Charger quarterback Landon Robinson’s pass on fourth and one from the Yellow Jackets 38.

The Chargers scored on fourth and five from Fort Mill’s nine. Christian Schettler’s 26-yard field goal broke the shutout for Lake Wylie.

Fort Mill head coach Rob McNeely talked about what he wanted out of the jamboree after game.

“Good thing about it is we got a lot of guys in (to the game), that normally wouldn’t get to play,” he said. “We got some good stuff on film for them, so just gotta look at it and grow from there.”

Fort Mill will open the regular season next week at home against Clover High School on Aug. 21.
