Fort Mill’s Natalie Michelow led the Jackets with five goals in the loss to Marvin Ridge Monday night at Bob Jones Stadium.

The Fort Mill girl’s lacrosse team dropped its first game of the season playing shorthanded as they fell at home 14-10 to the Marvin Ridge Mavericks.

Fort Mill struggled with passing, ground balls and winning face-offs, but head coach Kirsten Terry said the season is young and had they been at full strength she feels things would have been different.

“We had some injuries and sickness and were missing two starters,” she said. “We just have to get back to a rhythm. Defensively, we have to adjust to what the game situation is.”

The Jackets are now 1-1 on the season and did play more like they are known for in the second half against the Mavericks. In the first half, the game went back-and-forth early on as the two teams traded the first six points.

Marvin Ridge went up 2-0, but then Fort Mill came back with goals from Emma Marchan and Natalie Michelow within the first five minutes of play.

The two teams traded goals again as Marchan scored the second of her two goals in the game to tie the game at 3-3 at the 18:45 mark in the first half. From there, things went sideways for Fort Mill as Marvin Ridge would rattle off five of the next six goals to take an 8-4 lead. The Jackets did get a goal in the process coming from Sydney Wilcox.

Fort Mill tried to keep it close within the last 8:30 of the first half as Lydia Laney scored two goals during that stretch, yet Marvin Ridge was too strong offensively for the Jackets and went up 10-6 at the half.

The second half was better for Fort Mill as each team scored four goals, but the Jackets struggled to rally.

Michelow scored four second half goals for Fort Mill to keep pace with Marvin Ridge, as she had five goals in the game.

Up next for the Jackets is their first road game of the season as they travel to Clover on Thursday, March 3. They return home March 14 after three consecutive road games.
