Fort Mill’s Sydney Wilcox gets out of a crowd of Nation Ford Falcons during their game Monday night.

An aggressive Fort Mill girls’ lacrosse team easily defeated Nation Ford to improve to 2-0 in Region 3-5A with a 16-5 win Monday night.

Fort Mill scored just over a minute into the game and never took their foot off the gas as Natalie Michelow led the Jackets with four goals in the game. The Jackets jumped out to a 4-0 lead before Nation Ford scored.

For the Jackets, the goal coming out of the opening whistle was to hit Nation Ford hard and fast.

“They are aggressively good,” said Nation Ford head coach Kristine Schmidt. “We were in our heads tonight. We weren’t making good passes. Basic mechanics. I know we can do better.”

Nation Ford got a goal from Catherine Barhorst to put the Falcons on the board. Fort Mill came right back and rattled off three more goals to extend their lead. The Jackets kept the pressure on Nation Ford and pushed their lead to 9-3 at the half.

Despite their aggressive mentality, Fort Mill head coach Kirsten Terry said she didn’t feel like her team played well in the first half.

“I thought we didn’t play well,” she said. “I felt like we relaxed on them. The second half we came back and put things in the right direction.”

Fort Mill outscored Nation Ford 7-2 in the second half to improve to 4-1 overall. The loss dropped Nation Ford to 1-1 in the region and 4-2 overall. Besides Michelow’s four goals, Fort Mill got hat tricks from Alexa Strelick and Lydia Laney to go with two goals from Emma Ziemer and goals from Katherine Parham, Xan Hill, Indy Coston and Emma Marchan.  Nation Ford had two goals from Catherine Barhorst and Ann Windell and a goal from Maddie Barhorst also.

Fort Mill will play host to Myers Park Wednesday at Bob Jones Stadium and Nation Ford will next play at Spring Valley today.

Boys Lacrosse

Across town it was a different end of the spectrum as the Nation Ford boys’ lacrosse team beat Fort Mill 13-4. The win put the Falcons at 3-1 overall and 2-0 in region play. Fort Mill is now 2-2 overall and 1-1 in the region.

Catawba Ridge lost to Clover 12-4 at home and felt to 2-3 on the season.
