ROEBUCK – After getting a road win last week to start the season, the Catawba Ridge Copperheads couldn’t duplicate things this week.

Catawba Ridge fell to the Dorman Cavaliers 30-7 and dropped to 1-1 on the season with the Friday, Aug. 29 loss.

For the second consecutive week, Catawba Ridge was on the road as they traveled about two hours away to Roebuck, S.C. to face Dorman, which was a late add to their schedule over the summer after East Gaston backed out of a game. Catawba Ridge lost a coin toss to see if the game was going to be at home or away for them and thus only has four home games this season.

The Copperheads had just 105 yards of offense as they struggled to move the ball on the ground with negative 28 yards rushing. Catawba Ridge had 133 yards passing.

Catawba Ridge’s biggest woes came in trying to run the ball as they fumbled on their opening possession. Their next possession in the quarter resulted in a punt.

In the first quarter, Dorman scored just three minutes into the game on a 44-yard rushing score by Nick Means. That score would hold as the Cavaliers took a 7-0 lead into the second quarter.

The second quarter was more productive for Dorman as they scored twice to go up 20-0 both off rushing touchdowns. Dorman would tack on a 39-yard field goal before the half to go up 23-0 into the break.

In the third quarter, Dorman scored their final points of the game on a 21-yard touchdown run by Means, his third of the game as he would rush for 141 yards on 16 carries.

Catawba Ridge punted on two of their three possessions in the third quarter and struggled to get anything going.

The one bright spot in the game for the Copperheads came in the fourth quarter on a five-yard touchdown run by quarterback Bradey Compton, who ran for 23 yards on six carries. His score capped off a five play, 59-yard drive with 6:45 left in the game.

Compton led the offense as he went 12-of-26 for 132 yards. Will Griggs struggled passing for just one yard on 4-of-7 passing. Colton McCauley caught seven passes for 74 yards and Darius Sutton caught six passes for 66 yards to lead the Catawba Ridge receivers.

Catawba Ridge will have their home opener next week hosting the Chester Cyclones, who lost to Fort Mill on Friday.
