The Catawba Ridge golf team won the Region 3-4A tournament held Monday at Chester Golf Club.

CHESTER – All three local girls golf teams will live to fight another day as they qualified for the Upper State golf championships.

Catawba Ridge won the Region 3-4A tournament held at Chester Golf Club Monday shooting a 327 as a team, despite missing one of their regular players due to sickness. York was second in the region tournament with a 394 followed by South Pointe with a 435 and Indian Land with a 436. Northwestern finished fifth with a 445.

The Copperheads were led by Eileen Zeoli with a 74 (36-38) over the 18-hole tournament. Katherine Mann finished with a 78 (40-38) also for Catawba Ridge. Reagan Lynch had a round of 83 (42-41) and EllaRose Hill shot a round of 92 (47-45) to finish out the scoring for the Copperheads. Zeoli, Mann and Lynch finished first through third in the tournament.

Catawba Ridge will now go to the Upper State tournament at Saluda Valley Country Club in Williamston next Monday, Oct. 17 to try and qualify for the 4A state tournament in Hardeeville the next week. The top eight teams from the Upper State will qualify for the state tournament. The Copperheads are one of the favorites along with Pickens, May River and AC Flora to win the tournament.

“We have a really good chance,” said Catawba Ridge head coach Chris Powers.

Catawba Ridge had four girls make the All-Region team with Zeoli, Mann, Lynch and Hill.

Also at Chester Monday, teeing off about 90 minutes earlier was the Region 3-5A tournament which was won by Blythewood going away with a 324. Nation Ford was second with 362 and Fort Mill was third with a 367. Spring Valley rounded out those going to the 5A Upper State tournament next week, which will also be held at Chester again, with a 375.

Nation Ford was led by Vivian Harris with an 83 (41-42) and Sara McCaskill with a 91 (42-49), while both Katie Griggs and Piper Sabino each shot a 94. Griggs went 48-46 in her round, while Sabino shot a 49-45 in her round. Both Harris and McCaskill made the All-Region team for the Falcons.

“We will take it,” said Nation Ford head coach Amelio Rodriguez. “We are getting there. Playing the same course will help.”

Fort Mill was led by Mackenzie Finn, who shot a 79 (36-43) and Cayla Cappuzzo, who shot an 86 (41-45).

Sam Benton came in with a 92 (47-45) and Ava Starosky finished with a 110 (50-60) to round out the scoring for Fort Mill. Both Finn and Cappuzzo made the All-Region team as well for Fort Mill.

“We came in about how I thought,” said Fort Mill head coach Sims Reeves. “Our girls are now more comfortable with this course.”
