Catawba Ridge’s Beau Nicoll sets the ball during the Copperheads’ match against the Indian Land Warriors Monday.

The Catawba Ridge Copperheads boys’ volleyball team made history Monday winning their first ever playoff match in their first attempt.

The Copperheads swept Indian Land 3-0 (25-16, 25-20, 25-22) for the third time this season having seen them twice before in Region 3-4A play.

“I was trying to tell them its like a clean slate,” said Catawba Ridge boys head coach Ross Lisee. “Everyone starts 0-0 in the postseason.”

The first set against Indian Land started close with Catawba Ridge going up 5-3, but the Warriors rallied to tie it at 10. The Copperheads then rattled off six straight points to go up 16-10 and held a strong lead at 21-16, before closing it out with four consecutive points.

In the second set Catawba Ridge was even stronger as they opened with a 5-1 lead and never trailed. The Copperheads pushed their lead to 13-9 and then 22-19 despite Indian Land pressuring them at the net. Catawba Ridge was able to hold off any rally Indian Land had to go up 2-0 in the match.

Catawba Ridge again started strong in the third set, but Indian Land rallied to tie the set at 5-5. From there, the Copperheads clawed ahead to take a 13-9 lead forcing Indian Land into a time out. Catawba Ridge maintained controlled throughout the set going up 22-19, before finishing off the match.

Catawba Ridge will now host Greenwood, who won 3-2 over AC Flora, on Wednesday, Oct. 25. The Copperheads are 19-8-1 overall on the season.
